Physically dialing in sound fequencies to induce beautiful geometry provides insight into the way sound, tone and resonance can affect our lives.

Cymatics is the study of how sound creates form and patterns on various surfaces such as water,, alcohol and oils.

Ongoing prototyping of live display systems for multi-channel cymatics research and entertainment. The intent is to create an experience to enable anyone to physically explore this realm. Current components include a 6 ring array of neopixel leds which are programmable using an arduino and DMX, multitrack audio mix via ableton Live, hot swappable vessels (to explore different substances and sizez) and focussable armatures for cameras and led arrays.

Vibrating water at certain key frequencies will induce complex geometry on the surface. This provides insight into the way sound, tone and resonance can affect our lives and the world around us.

MORE INFO

We created this Cymatics Symulator to demonstrate the key relationships that audio frequencies have with matter (i.e. water). Turn on the sound to explore. Note the frequency tabs at the bottom which can also be clicked if you want to bounce around.

Cymatics in Medicine

This is what the sound of 40hz looks like. Scientists at MIT are using it to fight Alzheimer’s.

A new study zeroes in on how 40Hz sensory stimulation helps to sustain an essential process in which the signal-sending branches of neurons, called axons, are wrapped in a fatty insulation called myelin. Often called the brain’s “white matter,” myelin protects axons and insures better electrical signal transmission in brain circuits.

Sometimes it feels like Cymatics has a mind of its own. As the system and variables grow in complexity a personality emerges. Many of the best captures happen out of the blue and are often hard to recreate.
